Have 55 f-100 with worn 239. Should I overhaul it or replace it with 292 ?

Also where can I purchase overhaul kit for 239 or 292

Thanks, Pappy

Howdy and Welcome Aboard!

I had a 239 in my 55 F-600. I chose to replace it with a 292 from a 60 F-100 because of parts availability. If you have a high mount pump this is particularly important because the 239 model high mount water pump is very rare!

Cheers,

Rick

Pappy,

At the end of the day ,its going to be your money??? I would rather have a 292 than a 239 any day ??? You can always tell everyone its a" stock " 239 . Only you will know the truth .If I had the money I would buy  " 375  cu in Texas Special " from Ted Eaton and tell every scrub lover in the world "It's only an old 272 Y-Block "????.

Welcome pappy, I think your choice of engines should reflect how important originality is to you, and what expectations you have. What do you want from it, to make power or just cruise around? If you don't mind it not being exactly original then the 292 is cheaper to build, and parts are easier to find. The general consensus here seems to be that 239's and 12volt conversions are the only way to go. That is their personal opinion only. I have driven y-blocks most of my life but never had a 239 until this year. I also don't mind the 6volts, it starts fine. If and when it needs very much work I will go with a 292 because of parts availability and price. A little more power doesn't hurt either, but it is fine like it is for how I use this vehicle.

Here is one source for engine kits for 272, 292, and 312 engines only.
