I will try and make this shortSmile I took the 56' Merc wagon I have into a shop to take care of a rear main seal leak. It ended up being a blown head gasket. UGH! Fuel got into oil. Guy took engine halfway apart and it sat for 2 months, was a weekend project thing. Which meant the carb sat for 2 months. I have an Autolite 4100 from Pony Carb in New MExico on it. It has the original 312 y-block in it. When engine was all put together and I drove the wagon home it seemed fine. I drove it 40 miles the next day out of town, and it started to run rough, that has NEVER happened! And it has been a daily driver for over ten years now. It got so bad, I couldn't start the thing for 30 min, then it finally started and lots of black smoke came out the tailpipe. A freind of mine was there nearby and followed me home. He said it looked like a diesel! I had a freind look at my carb as I started it up with air cleaner off. He shouted STOP! The fuel bowls were flooding. Sooo, we took the carb off, and blew it all out, cleaned it with carb cleaner and it seemed to run better. I took it out on the freeway and came back into town, it started to hesitate. GREAT!! I made it home ok. Now I tried to start it up, with air cleaner off, and it's just puking gas all over the carb. Could my plugs be so oil fouled that junk keeps building up on htem and clogging the jets in the carb? I gave it another oil change with cheap oil to flush it out. I plan on running it about 1000 miles then changing it again. I am trying to sell this thing too and this will NOT look good to the buyer! I need help! The carb has about 40,000 miles on it. Thanks! Its just flooding! pull it apart and check needle .and for junk in bowl. probable sitting and disruption to manifold and fuel lines could have built up particles etc in fuel system. The highlighted paragraph just does not happen!Wink

If you had fuel in the oil, the carb problem existed before the engine work was done.  As Bill said, the carb is flooding.  The plugs are probably fuel fouled by now.
