Just noticed a set of drip trays fot sale on eBay. Don't know why anyone would want them, unless you needed an easy way to shim the rocker supports the exact thickness of the trays (to correct geometry). Ford didn't even list them in their '49-'59 parts catalog. But, I have always wondered what the engineers were thinking when they included them on the early Y-blocks. What purpose were they originally designed to serve?

Rocker drip trays will help to minimize or redirect the oil away from the valve guides. Too much oil on the guides will promote buildups on the intake valves as well as excessive oil comsumption.
