If you think it is the coil getting hot, try cutting 1/2 inch copper tubing to a length of 1 1/2 inch's and use them as spacers between the coil bracket and the block. You will have to get longer bolts also. It will keep the coil from getting too close to the manifold and keep it cooler. Also re-route the fuel line away from the block, go straight up from the pump and bend accordingly to the carb with a tubing bender, that will prevent most vapor locks. It worked for me and here in southern Texas it does get hot!

Check the gas tank vent line, I think somebody else just had this problem with mud daubbers plugging up the vent line. Also a plugged up fuel line can cause this, I had a situation once where it was plugged enough that fuel would pass through it if you let it sit for a while enough to run 10 minutes or so but would then starve and die a few miles down the road. It was an overnight trip through the white mountains during a blizzard, almost froze to death that night, it wasn't dirt but the fuel line icing up, finally made it to an open store about 6am and dry gas cured it. I suppose dirt in the fuel lines could cause the same symptoms.

That is a characteristic of a bad coil. Oh, not being poetic, but to stop functioning when it gets hot.

Just for the heck of it, if it quits again, grab the coil. If it is squalding hot, that could be it. I`ve seen this before. They will die, cool a little, start again. Just a thought.

Could be plugged or obstructed fuel line.Also possible it has the wrong gas cap.Try removing gas cap and see if it makes a difference if it dies again.May also be water in the gas.If it dies again check for ignition by removing a wire and hold near block and see if you have spark when motor is cranked. One other idea-next time it dies check the carb by pumping the throttle while looking down the carb and see if there is fuel in the float bowl.Possibly a stuck needle and seat cutting off fuel flow to the carb?Just some ideas to see whether the problem may fuel or ignition related.Is the ignition points and condensor or electronic converted?

Hi all,

I recently baught a 56 Fairlane with a 292 with a edelbrock 650, today we took it on the road for the first time and after a few miles the engine just dies. It will only start again after 10 minutes or so.

I was thinkin it had a bad fuel pump and the carb didn't get enough fuel, so I installed a new one, and without any succes.

It has a manual choke, so I figured it wont be a problem with the choke either.



What do you guys think it could be? Maybe dirt in the gas tank?
