I'm doing a restomod on a 57 ranchero, one of the rear frames is rotted by the rear spring shackle . With help from my racecar bud, we plan to whack the rear frame at the kickup. Replace it with tubing, fab a 4 bar for the rear end. We will most likely use a z-link, which is a4-bar with one link going back. I've already repaired the floors ahead of the axle, don't want to cut it up to accept a conventional 4-bar. This will be nice for changing tires, the leaf spring setup is impossible to change a wide tire.

Has anyone ever fitted a 4 bar rear end with coil overs in a 1957 Fairlane or Custom????? If so would like some pics of how it was done and with what. Regards,

The Merc is going to be nice even if it does not have a Y block! At least it's got a ford engine! Some of the guys that frequent the "Slick 60's" site have used the crown vic frames in early 60's pickups. They look pretty neat if you want a low stance.

I just finished changing the frame in my '57 Ranchero. I used an '83 Lincoln frame, and had to shorten it 4" to make the wheelbase correct, and narrow it 2" so the tires would be inside the fenders. Had to fabricate all the body mounts, and modify the 312 oil pan to fit in the now too-narrow 2nd crossmember Steering shaft had to be cut off and fitted with two universal joints and a short piece of shaft to line up with the Lincoln box. But it all worked out, drives great. John

Actually I have no idea if the Y-Block will fit! It very well might since the 302-460's fit in a early Ford without too much trouble. The advantage of a modern ride and suspension would be tempting. I just have a thing about Y-Blocks! The biggest issue will be complete striping of the cars to unbolt the bodies from the frames and then figureing out the correct placement of the body on the new frame and making any necessary body mounts. At this stage (bare frame)v it would be a good time to check out the driveline conversion. Take pictures! Some others may be interested! Chuck

Really? So it will work? I can't really afford the rack & pinion switch over kit. But i do have the crown vic just sitting there. So what do u do? So you don't think the y-block will fit? Okay, Thanks for the info! Now i got a place to start digging.

Has anybody ever tried or heard of trying to put a 55-56 fairlane on a 88-90 crown vic frame? Just curious.
