Question: I have a 292 block I want to bore out to 312 spec and run a ground 312 crank. Can machine shops grind .050 to make 3.8 standard 312 or should I just go .080 and make it 3.83? Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

Check piston availablity for standard 312. If readily available, then bore .050. .030 312 pistons are available, and the block will probably stand .080 overbore. Sonic check will verify.

Thanks for the reply. I think both std and .030 seem to be available. I am going to get it sonic tested. Is there a rule of thumb about recommended thickness of cylinder walls when sonic testing? Thanks.

idaho211 (8/23/2011) ....I am going to get it sonic tested. Is there a rule of thumb about recommended thickness of cylinder walls when sonic testing?Try to maintain at least 0.100” thickness in all quadrants. More is better.
