Oil Filter adapter question

Most of the oil filter adapters I have seen have the "TOP" right over the oblong hole. However, I got one where the oblong hole is about 90 degrees from the "TOP"



What is the role/function of the oblong hole - oil from the pump to the filter or oil from the filter to the bearings, etc.



Does it make a difference where the oblong hole is located - must it be at the top?

The oblong hole is from the pump to the filter.  It is located at the top so the filter doesn't drain when the engine is off.  Oil pressure wise it makes no difference where the slot is.

Observation, from Johns explanation of the oblong hole normally being at the top. It would seem that if not being at the top, causes the oil filter to drain down, that would definately not be desirable for cold start ups.

I have a 1956 F100 with a 272 Y-Block and had the same problem which I solved today based on several hours of trouble-shooting. I rebuilt the carburetor several months ago, and I removed again today to diagnose based on postings from several web sites. What I didn't hear on any of the sites was mention of the economizer valve in the carburetor. Out of kicks today after breaking the carburetor down I filled the fuel chamber with fuel to see if it leaked anywhere, sure enough the fuel was leaking past the economizer valve which caused flooding at low idle. I replaced the economizer valve washer which improved the seaating, tighten, confirmed it didn't leak. and re-installed the carburetor. The truck runs great and starts right up.

The one with the hole on the side could be for a 90 degree adapter, I have a couple of those sitting on a shelf at the shop, I'll check them out if I go there today.

The hole was indeed there to prevent oil drain-back in a day when filters weren't equipped with them.



You could probably get away without it now by using a filter that has an anti drain-back valve installed internally.



Also, if you have a remote filter installed, it won't be necessary either.



I am using a Baldwin B2 filter on my 292.



In the Product Guide, they actually spec the filter for a Ford F-series truck 1960 , 292 and many other cars, trucks, and off road equipment.............. but it's also generally "spec'd" as usable for hydraulic or transmission use.





I use Baldwin filters in everything I own (except my airplane)
