Hoosier Hurricane (8/23/2011)
Paul:
The oblong hole is from the pump to the filter. It is located at the top so the filter doesn't drain when the engine is off. Oil pressure wise it makes no difference where the slot is.The hole was indeed there to prevent oil drain-back in a day when filters weren't equipped with them.
You could probably get away without it now by using a filter that has an anti drain-back valve installed internally.
Also, if you have a remote filter installed, it won't be necessary either.
I am using a Baldwin B2 filter on my 292.
In the Product Guide, they actually spec the filter for a Ford F-series truck 1960 , 292 and many other cars, trucks, and off road equipment.............. but it's also generally "spec'd" as usable for hydraulic or transmission use.
I use Baldwin filters in everything I own (except my airplane)
Go to the following link for specifications of any Baldwin filter.
