Its been 48 years since I've torn down a Y block so I'm having trouble remembering how to time one.  I installed my new timing gears and chain on my 312.  The dot on the camshaft gear and crankshaft gears are both located at about three o'clock.  There were no brass links or dots on the chain so I made sure there were twelve chain link pins between the dots on the gears just like the book calls for.  Here's my question.  When lined up in this position, No. 6 in the firing order is at top center on the compression stroke and not No. 1 cylinder.  Should I turn the engine over now until No. 1 comes to TDC on compression stroke and the TDC line on the damper lines up with the pointer so when I install my distributor the rotor will point to No. 1 in the distributor cap?
