i may have to remove the cam out of my y block [256merc & same cam/ with 272 crank rods & heads]can it be done in the car. with out touching the rest of the engine.i know that i,ll have to remove the rocker gear & push rods... (' ') Yes it can be done! my suggestion after you have front off engine is to set cam and crank marks up as in the installation mode, 12 pins apart between the gear dots, this will make it easy when reinstalling the tming gears. . Obvious thing to avoid is risk of lifter falling down when cam is being removed, use strong wooden clothes pegs to hold lifters in place, use magnet to raise them all right up before installing the pegs, this will allow cam to pass by the lifters. Mark where rotor button is facing then remove distributor. Other members can offer more hints also, just go slow and steady.
