O.K. First don't hate me or throw me off the site. I want to ask if anybody has tried to adapt any other balancers to the y. I did some research and diamension wise a, ( I know I am gonna hate myself for this) small block scrub crank snout Is very close to a Y. Being everybody scared me in columbus with my 55yr. old dampener I want to get it off but funds are low. I know a lot of guys that run scrubs and I can come up a ati or fluidampr pretty cheap and both have removable hubs which I can machine.Any input for you guys is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stan P.S. How about a 4-71 blower manifold for a Y? Or do I have to build one?

That's already being done Stan. Teds the man with the plan on converting dampers.

Jerry Christensen wrote an article for Y block Magazine several or more years ago detailing how to adapt a scrub Fluidamper to the Y block crank. There are probably some here who have some more info as from what I understand, Christensen doesn't do computers.

Cragar made a 471 manifold for the Y but they are super rare. The last two I saw on EPAY went for over $4000! There is some work on converting a dual four to blower but its not an easy fix. As far as the damper it has and can be done. Problem is realinging the pullies to the non Y damper. I'm sure it can be done by adapting aftermarket pullies. I would love to see your rig with a stroker engine and 471. Chuck
Y's guys rule! Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

Stan others have pointed out the damper answer, ted has it sorted out. yes the cragar blower intakes are rare and myself and scotty have one. They are easy to make, i got offy tripower intake and milled top off and screwed plate to top, welded inside rectangular opening, same size as blower gasket then machined it flat. will post pic tommorrow.

[quote][b]MoonShadow (9/10/2011) converting a dual four to blower...
I'm recalling a 60s car mag. photo spread on a black Paxton-supercharged 312 '56 T-Bird with a homemade dual quad blower box. Could never find that magazine again and would love to get it back (it had a '55 rear bumper, Cragar mags, no portholes & radiused wheel wells).

Stan, Ted has the Dampers West dampers for a Y block, nice piece. But if you want to adapt the scrub damper it is pretty easy. Just hone it to fit the y crank and machine a spacer to take up the slack. You can cut the spacer from a old Y damper, of course you will have to remark the scrub damper for TDC. Ted used a sbc intake on Randys dragster engine, I think he has an artical on his web site detailing the install.

Although ATI does make a Y specific SFI approved damper, the pricing on that particular damper got way out of hand. As a result, Innovators West now offers a SFI approved damper specific to the Y engines at about half the price of the ATI unit. While the ATI damper uses the three bolt scrub pulley pattern, the IW damper uses the SBF four bolt pulley pattern. Both of these dampers still have the belt pulley sitting ~1/2” further forward than the factory damper which necessitates relocating any accessory drives that are belt driven (water pump, alternator, etc.) off of the damper. Here’s the links to some past threads regarding aftermarket dampers.

But back to the retrofitting a scrub damper. If the damper hole is honed just a few thousandts, then it fits the Y crankshaft. Be sure to use honing equipment that accommodates holes with slots. The next issue to take care of is the keyway size. Easiest fix is to simply narrow the ¼” Y key so it’s 3/16” at its top so the scrub damper can slide over it. Another option is to re-broach the damper itself so the 3/16” slot becomes ¼”. Either process will require a new timing pointer or new timing marks on the damper itself. Another option is to make a new or fresh keyway slot in the damper so the TDC on the damper aligns with the Y timing tab. Here’s a link showing the number of degrees to get the TDC mark aligned. And also add that a spacer must be fabricated that sandwiches itself between the damper and the crankshaft gear due to the shortness of the scrub damper.

Here are pictures of a Fenton 2X4 intake that’s been modified to accommodate a Roots style of blower. This is Chuck’s engine which is going to be broken in using this blower setup before switching it over to a blow through centrifugal blower setup.

WOW!! I am liking that setup Ted, I would have a hard time removing it in favor of the blow thru system.
