Hello All, I am seriously considering pulling the FMX out of my 56 and going with a Tremac 5 speed. I can find a pedal set up for my car and need to know what else I would need, if I use a Mummert adaptor plate? I assume I need a Y Block standard bell housing and flywheel. Can I use my stock starter or do I need a new mini starter? Also is a Mustang 5 speed the way to go, I was told I would have to cut my bench seat if I do this? Someone told me to use a 5 speed out of an S-10 chuv? I know this is a sacraligeous, but I was told the shifter is in the middle of the tranny, not the rear? Will the Mummert plate bolt to this tranny? Lastly I was told to use a hydraulic clutch? Don't know much about these, any idea what parts I would need? Sorry for all the questions, but just want to see if this is a viable option. I LOVE banging gears, and figure this may give my old Y a little more on the bottom end, not to mention better gas mialiage at the top! (Needed for $5.00 + / gallon gas up here!)

Rob: I can't help much with your questions, but we did put an S10 trans in my son's '65 Mustang, and the shifter came out the original hole in the Mustang floor. I have a complete pedal setup out of a '54, but I don't know if it will fit your '56.

Thanks John, There is a 56 in a local scrap yard that has the pedals I need, so that is not a problem. I guess you answered on of my questions though, a Tremac 5 speed out of an S10, will bolt up to the Mummert adaptor. It must be the same bolt patern as the Mustang then, even if it came out of a chuv! lol

Canadian Hot Rodder; I could be wrong, but I believe John Mummert was pretty specific about the use of 89-93 (I think) T-5 tranny's for use with his adapter plate for both bolt pattern and input shaft and pilot specs. I used an '89 Mustang T-5 and cut 1/4" off the end of the pilot on the input shaft and everything worked out well. I don't know if the Tremec 5 speed has the same input shaft or bolt pattern. Rono

That is correct! Mummerts adapter is only for a T-5 from a mustang. To use his adapter and to get the shifter where you need it, you will have to swap the tail shafts. Meaning, use a tail shaft from an S-10 T-5 and adapt it to the mustang T-5. A bit of work but has been done. Google T-5 in a Y-block and there is tons of tech info out there. There are other companies that also make adapters allowing you to you the S-10 T-5 directly. You can put anything from a Turbo 350 to a C4 behind your Y-block.

If I remember correctly, the Mustang T-5's are called World Class, meaning much stronger than the S-10's. Am I correct???

I put a 89 Must T5 in my 57 Custom 300 and although I didnt have to cut my seat, the shifter boot does hit the seat a bit. I'm a bit vertically challenged so I have to have the seat almost all the way forward. I made a bracket to attach to the shifter stub out of the trans that moved to shifter arm forward about an inch. I've been driving it a couple years now and seems to work fine. I've been thinking about doing the S10 tailshaft swap but I dont like the idea of cutting another hole in the floor.

Also I forgot to add that of all the modifications I've done to my car I like the results of this one the best. The car is an absolute joy to drive with a 5sp. You also get alot of surprised looks at the car shows. One other thing, if you plan on banging gears I would add one of those aftermarket shifter stops on it to limit the shifter throw. Without one the synchro collar can travel too far and things start to fly apart inside.

paul2748 (9/12/2011) If I remember correctly, the Mustang T-5's are called World Class, meaning much stronger than the S-10's. Am I correct???Not all Mustang T5s are world class. The world class T5 have upgrades to increase reliability and improve shifting. It has nothing to do with the strength of the transmission. Any T5 can be upgraded so if you plan to rebuild, it really doesn't matter which T5 you buy.

Thank you for the info guys, good to know! I am 5' 11" and keep my seat fairly far back, so I may be ok with the mustang tranny alone. Can anyone who has a Mustang T-% in their car tell me the distance from the fire wall to the shifter in their car? This measurement will tell me if I need the S-10 tailshaft or not. Thank you.
