Ok well Im getting my y block all ready to go back in my truck. So I have cleaned and painted mostly everything. Now its time to put all the new gaskets on it, I didnt buy a whole new gasket set because I didnt take the heads off. I am replacing the intake gaskets, valley pan, valve covers, exhaust, oil pan, timing cover and water pump gaskets. Which of these need sealant or is the gasket good enough to seal itself?

I put a thin coating of high temp silicone (the orange stuff because it doesn't show much if the block is red) on a lot of the stuff you mentioned. Intake excepted but I did use the sealant on the water ports on the intake.. I glue the valve covers gaskets to the valve cover with the same stuff, but not the gasket to the head. Nothing in the exhaust.

Old trick on valve cover gaskets is to glue them to the valve cover and put a light coating of grease on the side that goes to the head. This allows you to remove and replace them easily for valve adjustment without replacing the gasket each time.

Well I ended up getting permatex super high tack gasket sealant. I hope this works good.
