I have been going back and forth on if I want to replace the oil pump on my motor. I was told it ran well and honestly it looks it. Wasnt sludged up or real dirty either. So I think i am just going to take the pump off to cleam and put ned gasket under it. Is there any tips or anything I need to know before I re assemble and fire it up?

I am thinking when in doubt, replace it. Cheap insurance. May be fine today and not fine tomorrow.

It's not hard to drop the oil pump, but it can be a pain getting it back in. There are two 1/2" AF bolts through the pump from the bottom and one through from the top. If you strip the pump to clean it make sure you grease the gears when you put it back together. If you don't it won't develop suction and oil pressure. You need to loosen the nut on the sump oil pickup tube to allow the pump to drop. Be careful when you put it all back in that you don't cross thead the nut that holds the pickuptube to the pump.

Just replace all the seals and gaskets and you'll do fine.

Is it pretty simple to just rebuil the oil pump? Who sells a full kit to do so?

If you have the Melling iron pump you can get new gears and gaskets form several aftermarket companies like MAC's, Obsolete Ford Parts, Concourse Parts and Tee Bird Products just to mention a few. If you have the aluminum georotor type pump, they use an "O" ring seal which you can get, but I haven't found anyone that sells the gears for those.

Mac'sAutoParts stock the rebuild kit for the gerotor oil pump but only sell the complete Melling type gear pump. The gerotor kit is Part #:B7S-6600-8KT

I'm wondering why you think it is necessary to rebuild or replace the pump.
