Howdy all.

I am planning an exhaust system that will outlive me and the truck. I'll just buy the tubing, bends and pieces and GTAW (TIG) it all together.

Anyone have recommendations on what (SS) muffler will sound "good" but not be loud? I'll probably do a 2.5" system

Regards,

Rick

Exhaust sound is kind of an individual taste but I did the opposite, put 14 inch Magnaflows on the freshly built 312 in my 57 Bird. The idle with a cam is great but on moderate to hard acceleration they were too loud for me. I drive the car without a top most of the time so the exhaust sound is close to the ears. Full throttle freeway on-ramp going under a over-pass was like four Harley's with straight pipes. I was freaking out traffic big time. CHP would write me up in a minute. I just switched to 3 chamber Flowmasters, not my first choice but better. No classic "straight pipe" or "smitty" sound of the Magnaflows but distinctive and a good idle lope.

I'll second the "individual taste", but I've had two sets of short ovals from stainless specialties, one on a 'bird, and one set on my 32.

They've got a little "bark" when your at full throttle, but ok and no drone at cruise, This is almost always with the top down. Can't comment on price, since it's been years, and there's a lot more available now. They've go a variety of parts that might interest a fabricator like you with the right welder. Top quality, no off shore cheap stainless.

30 inch Smitty's mounted as far forward as possible with plenty of tailpipe behind them. That will get you the old style Y-block rumble and not be at all offensive.

Now you're talking! remember guys, it's a truck (actually a REAL truck) so the rumble is what I really want. not a lot of hotrod noise on acceleration!

I'll definitely have a "lot of tailpipe"!! The pipes will go all the way to the back of the 12' flatbed!!

I have a 62 F100 4X4 with a stroked 292.  I am running headers with about 2 ft of 2in pipe with 12in magnaflow glasspacks.  Then about 5ft of pipe and it exits in front of the rear tires.  We stepped the pipe up to 2 1/2in when it turns to come out.  The sound is amazing.  It is loud but when you are accelerating it sound like nothing else.  We bring this engine up to 6,500rpm right now and it sounds great.  It is loud but everyone knows when you are passing them.  You definetely let the chevy boiz know who's in charge!!!  I have a few pics of my exhaust under the street forum.  62 F100 4X4 Makeover.
