Mike, do as AussieBill suggests, move the pads before you install it. Since mine was already installed and I was going to lower it I fabbed up some 2" lowering blocks with a 1/2" offset of both sides.

I've read where the 57 is reeeeaal close and was kind of hoping that was what this was.

I've not measured anything, these are the measurements the seller is giving me. He doesn't know  what it came out of either. According to him, these are the measurements,

From outside brake drum to outside brake drum is 57 3/4".

Between the brake backing plates 50 1/4".

From the center of one spring perch to the center of the other 43".

Does this sound like a 57????  Or something close???    Do you know of any other 9 inchers that would fit?

I don't want to have to force it. I found out a long time ago that's not a good idea.  I would probably use plan B, although I'm not sure at this time exactly what that would be.

Thanks again

Missouri Mike

Mike, the 57-59 9" diff will fit with the saddles moved slightly as discussed, there is only about 1/2" overall width difference and is what we use here for years in 55 56 ford customlines. regards bill.Smile

Thanks for that website, that really helped. Someone else suggested drilling the holes out a little, too.

Thanks everyone

Try this site. I've been told that the 57 9" is the same dimensions as the 56. SO I would suppose the 57.25" is correct. If the spring pad locations are only slightly off some people have redrilled the center pin hole offset to correct it. Chuck

I have seen many that force the springs across to suit the orig saddles, not good practice. regards bill.

That's the way mine was and it wore the bushings out at an angle. After replacing the bushings and anti-squeak pads I could not get it back together and the rear shackles were no where near close. Screwed up the lowering blocks also.

After everything was tightened up with new parts the 1" difference was too much to "force the springs to suit".

Like Aussiebill says, "not good practice".

Mike

As Aussie Bill said 57/59 Ford 9 inch is 53 1/2 flange to flange and 43 spring perch to spring perch. This is also very close to 65/66 Mustang 8 inch which is much easier to find. Pete

Thanks a lot guys.

I searched several times and I saw a lot of this will fit, that will fit but I never saw any actual numbers.

I've located an older 9" that's 43" center to center on the perchs and 50 1/4 " backing plate to backing plate.

So if someone can give me backing plate to backing plate numbers I may have found a rear end for my 55 Customline.

Thanks again

Missouri Mike

Mike, the 57-59 9" diffs are within 1/2" of the original overall width and the saddles only need moving slightly. i have seen many that force the springs across to suit the orig saddles, not good practice. regards bill.

Mike, where are you measuring from "backing plate to backing plate? Out of curiosity I just went out and measured my 8" and it is 52" flange to flange. I will I do have difficulty installing ires between the axle and fender.
