Hi guys As subject line says, can someone tell me the distance from backing plate to backing plate? Also, from center of one spring perch to the center of the other? This would be for a '55 sedan (or 56 or 57). My car isn't where I can get to it right now to measure. Thank you Missouri Mike

I was just setting up my rear end the other day in my '55 Ranch, I assume they are the same? 83" spring center to center. Don't know about the backing plates, I'm running a 8". Sorry, should be ~42".

I am so sorry, one of those Old Folks Moments... should be 42". Thanks for calling me on that. I remember the numbers because the bushing were wearing out at a wierd angle. The 8" that was installed in the car turned out to be 43" center to center. Wasn't a happy camper. As maxwell Smart would say "Missed it by that much".

Thanks a lot guys. I searched several times and I saw a lot of this will fit, that will fit but I never saw any actual numbers. I've located an older 9" that's 43" center to center on the perchs and 50 1/4 " backing plate to backing plate. So if someone can give me backing plate to backing plate numbers I may have found a rear end for my 55 Customline. Thanks again Missouri Mike

Mike: I measured the rear out of my son't '55. The brakes are not there, but the housing width is 53 1/2". The width axle flange to axle flange is 57". Spring pad distance is 42".

Mike, where are you measuring from "backing plate to backing plate? Out of curiosity I just went out and measured my 8" and it is 52" flange to flange. I will I do have difficulty installing ires between the axle and fender.

Thanks again Missouri Mike Mike, the 57-59 9" diffs are within 1/2" of the original overall width and the saddles only need moving slightly. i have seen many that force the springs across to suit the orig saddles, not good practice. regards bill.

Mike As Aussie Bill said 57/59 Ford 9 inch is 53 1/2 flange to flange and 43 spring perch to spring perch. This is also very close to 65/66 Mustang 8 inch which is much easier to find. Pete
