It costs to buy the bell and starter to graft the C-4 to a Y but there are advantages. The C-4 is lighter and more efficent. As to strength, a friend runs a C-4 behind a 427 windsor with a 250 hp shot of nitrous with no problems in a Ranger Pickup. Pulls 1.34 60 foots and low 9 sec Et's.
He rebuilt the trans with a shift kit and extra clutch discs being careful using the available shinms to obtain the proper clearances.
A stock C-4 wll easily stand up to a good Y, and give you a first gear starts.
You probably will not save much money but I would go with the C-4.
