I pulled the trans from my 58 ranchero to fix an oil leak. I need to order gaskets, I don't think this is the one that came in the 58's. I have found a brand new 1964 Hurst Mystery shifter kit for a 58 ford 3-speed OD. It will work on this trans, but the mount is 1-1/2" wider than my trans at the top tail section bolts. Also, the instructions say it is for a 9-bolt curved bottom side cover. My side cover is 9 bolts but its rectangular not curved bottom. I'll try to post a picture, the numbers on the trans are= tailshaft, right side R10F-1 WGdiv Left side, C-11- 3 Main case, right side, 39X 1A7006-A 7-F side cover, AB 7222B The edit page says I exceeded the space a couldn't load the pics?

thanks, Mark

Sounds like the standerd duty Ford transmission used on 6 cylinder and small V8's. The curved bottom side cover trans first came out on the '56 312 cars as I recall and was used up to '63 on the 406. Tread lightly on it or it will break. You should be able to modify the Hurst to work if you are handy at all.

Hi Mark, Slumlord is right. The shifter you have is for a T-85 O.D. trans which has the curved bottom side cover. It is a stronger transmission than the one you have. Back in the 60's I bought a T-85 O.D. trans from a '56 Merc and installed it in my '56 Fairlane with 292. The Hurst catalog listed the '56 Merc and Ford having the same transmission, but that was incorrect. I'd been told by an expert Ford mechanic (Dean McKee) that Borg-Warner (who made the O.D. units) specified their larger O.D. unit for any car with over 300 cubic inches. Thus my '56 292 came with the light-duty trans, while the 312 Merc had the T-85 with the larger O.D. unit. I got a shifter for the T-85, which was contrary to the Hurst catalog. I wrote them a letter explaining that they should be aware that the '56 Merc with 312 did not have the same trans as a '56 Ford with 292. They sent me a nice letter back, and thanked me for setting them straight. Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

Thanks for the quick response, I think I have a 292, but I suppose it could be a 272. Modifying the hurst looks to be a breeze, just narrow up the top bracket, and tweak the bottom support. Looks like I'm looking for a 54-55 gasket set, I didn't want to order the t-85 stuff & send it back.

thanks, Mark
