If they had PTOs, they were 4 (or more) speed.  3 speeds didn't have PTO.

The Warner Gear T-98 in my '53 truck is syncro in 2nd,3rd,and 4th, and has the blank cover where a PTO would go.  The trans I currently have came from an early '60s truck, bolted right up to the Y truck bellhousing.

Been a long time but I can remember driving some of my dads trucks back in the 50's. Two shifters, two speed rear axle and no syncros. He taught me how it was done! Chuck

Chuck

What was said about double clutching is the answer. The time it takes you to double clutch the rpm's will drop to a point where it should plop into gear without any (or much) crunching.

Always worked in my 55 F-350 and 37 Ford flathead cabriolet.

Oh yeah, and remember to double clutch when down shifting.

I'd rather be lucky than good.................

It won't take long to learn how to shift it. If you aren't familiar with the crash boxes already. Brings to mind terms like "double clutch". Take your time shifting and let the engine speed drop a bit as you do. Those old trannys lasted a long time with a lot of abuse so they will usually take a few grinds. Chuck
