Owner's manual says 5 quarts for 8 cylinder engine plus 1 more quart if you replace the cartridge filter.

I believe that's 5 qts including filter in a passenger car and 6 qts for the T-Bird which includes the filter.

Gary brings up a good point on the front sump pans.  Five quarts with filter seems to match the front sump dip sticks but both the ’57 Car Shop Manual and 1955 car owners manual says 6 quarts with filter.  But the dipstick on my ’55 Customline 272 matches to 5 quarts with filter.  Six quarts would be the safer route for the front sump pans.

Here’s the info for the rear sump pans.

Pickup rear sump oil pans – 6 quarts with filter (from the 1958 Truck Shop Manual)

HD truck rear sump oil pans – 7 quarts with filter (from the 1958 Truck Shop Manual)

My '57 with the factory front sump, checks at 6. Exactly as Ted said. Actually a bit more with the Supercharger and lines
