I'm putting a 292 into my 32 Ford because there are too many bowtie small blocks in the world. I'm forced to move the generator up to clear the frame rails. This is a 50's hot rod so I don't want to put a new style alternator on it. Is there a generator or old school alternator that is approx. 2 inches shorter than the stock gen.?

A couple of suppliers make an alternator that looks like the old flathead generator. Do a google search and some of them should show up. I think Speedway may have one also. Look for a local rebuilder of alternators and generators they may have something on hand that will work. Chuck

I wound up using an alternator that was powdercoated black. Worst case is maybe you use something like that so its at least inconspicuous vs a cast alternator body? I dont think anyoone at shows has ever noticed it in my car....just a thought

The T-bird generators are different, and I'm pretty sure they're shorter.  You might want to check that out.

NOT shorter. End plate has different conductor bolt layout though.

I don't believe I've seen such an animal - a shorty generator.

I think someone above mentioned a black powdercoat alternator - and use a one wire / self-regulating version with a single #6 welding cable back to the starter solenoid. Cover the copper attachement lug with a shrink-wrap sleeve and generally make it as black as possible. You may have to paint or powdercoat the pulley and cooling fan to get them to "disappear' too.

You won't regret having modern electrical power on board.

you might go to powemasters and look at the applications chart for the power gen, generator look alikes. They've got some listed as shorty's. A phone call would probably get you loa. Even the GM gens look pretty similar. The advice above about the #6 cable is important. Until you do a one wire and check the difference in voltage at the battery with typical wiring, it's hard to believe the voltage drop that sometimes happens between the alt and the battery. I lost over a volt across the engine compartment in the 'bird.

Just for the record so eveybody will know the 12 volt gen in my 55Tbird is approx 7 1/2 inch from back to the end of shaft. With a thinner nut on the shaft you could cut the shaft down by 3/4 inch. Pete

Just thought of one. A Crosley Autolite 6 volt is very small.

 

I don't know about shorter but I did see this. had me rethinking my delco alt conversion.

Replaced the generator on my '56 John Deer "50" Two Cylinder tractor with an alternator painted black like the original generator and it sort of just disapears. Looks like it belongs there. Most of the old tractor guys do this. Held out for years but the last time the generator died decided to go wih a 2 wire GM alternator converted to one wire. Works great.
