Do Y Blocks Downunder run upside down? Gravity Sucks!!

Installing a L.D. Becker alternator conversion on my 1956 Fairlane with 292. It appears to be a one wire alternator. I am planning to run a 4 or 6 gauge cable from the alternator to the starter solenoid. Do I need any circuit protection (Mega fuse) or just hook it up as is? Is the 4 or 6 gauge wire too big? Thanks in advance.
