ALL AMERICAN RACER (3/18/2012) surf merc
get yourself a manual on CD from Forel.
getting the oil pan off is a BIG job.
N-O on the additives.
if you mean oil gets dark or even black quickly
that's a worn out engine.
Have A Nice Day!Modern oil goes black quiclkly and dont consider sump is big deal, just go step by step as previously suggested.

Probably would not hurt to pull the valve covers and remove the intake so you can pull the valley pan and really clean the motor.

On a 56 Ford the pan will come out without removing the sway bar. I would think the Merc is the same.

SurfMerc (3/17/2012) Thanks for the input. I have a 56 Monterey Wagon! Not sure if that makes a difference. It sounds like I should not under estimate the degree of difficulty to perform the task!! Thanks againDont give up before you start, its easy! rotate crank to No 1 cyl on TDC, loosen large nut on pick up tube at side of sump, drop both sway bar mounts, then undo oil pump tube nut, sump bolts and sump will be able to be removed.

Surf: You don't say what yr your wagon is? Makes a difference re pan removal. On 57 Ford cars for instance, the anti roll bar needs to be dropped...
