Paul Arcand asked a good question some time ago that needs a reply.

Paul asked why I list a cam for sale as being for automatic transmissions but not recommended for F-O-M's.

The real problem here is the torque converter used with the FOM and the acceptable idle speed.

The FOM converter is very tight and simply won't allow an idle speed above 550-600 RPM

Most newer cars have looser converters and idle speed can be somewhat higher, For performance use a modified converter with a higher stall speed can be used to allow more radical cams.

Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone who modifies the 2 piece converters that were common in the early Y-Block cars.

So the the choice is stick to mild cams if using the FOM or change to a C4 or AOD transmission that have readily available converters with stall speeds higher than stock.

I suspected something like that, but wanted to confirm it. Too bad no one does high stall convertors for Ford -Os but that's the way it is I guess..Thanks for the reply John.

I would think that a converter rebuilder that does higher stall could do the early FOM, the process would be the same as for later converters.  The FOMs bolt together instead of being welded, but that would only make it easier for the rebuilder.  The high volume, big name guys may not be interested, but there are many small independent converter shops around the country that may be willing.

Greetings to all: When I restored my 57 "D" code Fairlane 500 I installed a Cruse-O-Matic which made a huge difference coming out of the gate. In normal city driving, 1st gear starts allowed the engine to jump up in RPM's like a C4 or AOD. A higher stall converter would help with a bigger cam but "automatically" having 1st gear for every take-off would help in the cam department also. Just my thoughts. My 312 had the "EDB" cam, was bored .030 and drove a 3.56:1 gear which was probably the best running car I ever had and at my age, that's quite a few. Just my 2 cents.

I have approached an independent converter rebuilder about my FOM converter and he gave me a quote on raising the stall 400/500 RPM on my air cooled  converter that I can live with so yes it can be done. Pete

Chrisman torque converters in Colorado has answered me. He will modify the early Fordo's to your requested stall. I asked him for a quote on a 1600-1700 stall speed, Thinking that this would cover most mild cams. He quoted a figure of 85$!  If you want something else contact Larry Chrisman at Chrismantorqeconverters.com for a quote. I'm sure that extra work or repairs will add to that cost, and shipping will not be cheap at today's rates!
