I am putting together a '54 Mercury with a '61 292 Y-Block and '54 overdrive transmission. The engine and transmission are installed. I am trying to use the stock '54 Mercury clutch linkage. I have the correct '54 Mercury left side accessory dual exhaust manifold Part # EBU 9431-D on the engine. I attempted to install the clutch linkage assembly but the flat crossbar which goes between the linkage bracket on top of the frame and the engine bracket (which hold the swivel ball) ends up going right across the center of the lower exhaust manifold flange. It would be impossible to mount the header pipe onto the manifold flange with this interference. Has anyone ever put dual exhaust on a '54 Mercury with manual transmission? Was the clutch linkage a problem? Thanks, Alan S. Freeman

Alan:

On Fords, a '55-'56 equalizer bar has an offset in it to clear the dual exhaust pipe.  I would assume Mercury would be the same.  If you cannot come up with the later equalizer, you could use a right side manifold on the left side, which would exit forward and down, and a pipe can be made to route the exhaust to the muffler.

Alan,  Yes the 54 Mercury does also have a equalizer bar for the models with dual exhaust & manual transmissions. (Part# MB 7528-B. for Dual exhaust )    ( Part# MB 7528-A for Single exhaust )  I was fortunate to find one of these parts a ways back on ebay.  1954 Ford may have the same equalizer bar for the one`s equiped with dual exhaust.  It would be hard to visually identify the part unless you would hold the two parts side by side as they both have flat bars.  The offset is different between the two parts. The equalizer made for use with dual exhaust allows the bar to clear the exhaust to the rear of  pipe.  The two are unlike the 1955/56 Fords  that have a curve in the bar for clearance, like John said.  I may be able to dig up a illustrated view, or a photo of the two.  I can think of a couple of people who may have this part.  Hope this helped a little.  ( my first post )   54 Mercury 312

Paul,   Thank You.   It just hapened to be something I was familiar with.   It`s nice to brouse this site and learn a lttle more.   I was impressed with FED dragster posts, and how quick he got it together early in 2010.   I was just about to fill in a little more info. on the personal info.    54 Merc 312

Hi - I am restoring a 1954 Mercury Sun Valley. When I got the car, it already had a 4-speed toploader in it with a nice 272 engine with dual exhaust. I just bought a rebuilt 312 to put in it. Anyway, I have the front end down to the rails and I was taking some photos to prompt me on how to put the clutch linkage back together once I get the 312 installed. I can email you the photos if that would help you. If you would like them, let me know.

I solved my clutch linkage problem by duplicating the special equalizer bar that Mercury offered "back in the day" for dual exhaust installation on manual transmission cars. I was able to make the special part thanks to a picture sent to me of that part by 54Mercury312. Thanks to everyone who helped. Alan

Allen,

I put a 312 w/ T85 OD Trans in my 54 Ranchwagon had the same problem. I ended up getting a complete clutch cross over set up from a 56 ford passenger car. It all worked out with clearance for the standard shift rods, overdrive cables etc.
