Hi all, looking for some advice. Back in the fall I was preping my 60 Galaxie for a trip. I removed the gen and took it apart to check the brushes. They were fine. Now though when i start the car(292) the gen light stays lit brightly and I need to drive the car for 100 feet or so before the light will go out. It will come back on at idle. Revving it in neutral will dim the light but driving is when it totally goes out. No new parts were added and the regulator was not disturbed. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Did you polarize the generator when you put it back in?

If you had the brushes out, you probably put one in the other way round so it is not sitting squarely on the the commutatator. You may need to put some fine sand paper around the com segments and reseat the brushes to make sure the brushes are sitting squarely and making good contact.

Thanks everybody for the insights. I did polarize the field, but I am questioning the brushes. I know they were good but I am not positive I didn't maybe scratch or chip them when reinstalling them. So I think new brushes are in order. I know they are installed correctly as I didn't unscrew the pigtail just for that reason. Once again, thanks for the ideas.

I had a similar problem, turned out the spring that holds the brush tight to the commutator was not moving freely so one brush would skip. Chuck
