Howdy all



So, just trying to figure out a few last minute details on The Bird. Can someone tell me what GE or Sylvania (12V) bulb is used in the map light of the 55 Bird??



Next, have searched and searched but needing some details on the silly vacuum wipers. Just which line goes where, what does what, can I use just the "to wipers" port on the fuel pump or does the pump need engine vacuum to help?



Other question, what is the actual part number for the "Napa #6" thermostat I've seen discussed everywhere? Is it actually a #6?? Can just go into Napa and ask for this and will get the right part eh? Smile



Lastly (for now), any pics of how the front license plate bracket (oem ford) installs on the 55's?

The 55's used a 6 volt bulb - # 81. The 56/57 bulb was a #67. I assume the #67 will fit the 55 - if not, you will have to try to find a 12V replacement.



Can't help on the vacuum lines - my car is out. Unless your doing a factory restoration, go with the electrics. I have a 56 but I think the 55's and 56's were routed differently????



Thermostat - THM 6 should be the correct number. 170 degrees, wide mouth.



Front license plate bracket mounts on one of the bumper bolts on the right hand side. It looks like it doesn't belong there, but it does. Must be a ford screw up when the car was designed.

Those fuel pumps with vacuum assist need the hose from the wipers, and another hose to

the intake manifold.

There should be two hose fittings on the vacuum side of the pump to attach the hoses.

There is a little bit more to the vacuum lines in T birds and I assume Fords of the same vintage. The source of the vacuum is the engine. A metal line runs from the manifold to the vac side of the fuel pump. It is connected with about 4" of rubber hose pushed onto the brass tube on the vac pump. There is also a 4" rubber hose on the other brass tube on the top of the pump that goes to a second steel line that runs along the top of the engine towards the fire wall. There is then a piece of rubber tube that goes through the fire wall and comes to a little pot metal Tee. One side of this goes to the Heater temp controller the other side goes to the dash nob. And finally a rubber tube runs from the dash nob to the vacuum motor. The Dash knob can control the wiper speed which was much more difficult with electric in the '50's. Also there is a rubber hose from the control valve to the flying saucer valve that sits on the front of the intake manifold. this is the source for the hot water for the heater. There are no clamps on any of these vacuum lines.

The vacuum motor is actually quite powerful. If yours isn't working well at idle speed and the engine is making good vacuum then it is likely that the grease in it has gotten dried and hard. Try a direct tube from the intake manifold to the vacuum motor to be sure it is working OK. If not try squirting a little ATF into it and working it back and forth by hand until it frees up. Almost needless to say any leaks of air into all these hoses and fittings will make the wipers work badly or not at all.

Doug, thanks for the information about routing of vacuum lines. When I got my wagon the previous owner had one vacuum line from the fuel pump running to the heater controls and the other vacuum line from the fuel pump running to the wipers. I think he also tee'd the line to the heater into manifold vacuum. No wonder the wipers took about 5 minutes for one stroke!



So if vacuum is fed from the manifold to the fuel pump and then routed to the accessories, what is the purpose of having a vacuum pump on the fuel pump? Why not just use manifold vacuum?



I'm guessing the answer is something like they hadn't invented that coffee-can vacuum reservoir yet. Smile

The Vacuum diaphragm on the fuel pump assembly would properly be called a booster pump.  It helps keep the vacuum up when the engine is operating at low vacuum such as during acceleration. I dont think it was ever applied as a booster for power brake vacuum.

Thanks for the replies, mainly the wiper stuff. Gonna try to get them working this coming weekend. The motor does move freely by hand. Just gotta figure out hoses/lines, etc. etc. Didn't know there was a hose to the wiper "switch". Thought it just opened a door or something or a port for the wiper motor. Not sure where I'll get vacuum off the engine as it's a 57 intake with a Holley on it. The spot where factory vacuum I assume is in the intake, is covered by the fuel bowl of the carb. We'll figure something out. Just mainly need the wipers to function in order to pass inspection at the moment. Will keep ya posted.

OOPS! It has been a while since I looked the wiper motor but I just did so just a moment ago. I forgot there is a little slide valve on the vacuum motor itself and the control is a small Boden Wire (like a choke Cable but smaller) connection from the dash knob to the slide valve. Which also reminds me that there are what look like two air connections on the motor. The vacuum connection is the horizontal one, the center connection pointing down is where the air enters the system. My BadWink
