At the gas station repair shop I saw a women with a 70 Mustang and she had the hood up. Car has had, new radiator, new master, starter, rebuilt carb, distributor, etc ect etc etc.

Cars history. Battery was charged with polarity BACKWARDS and lots of fried wires. Supposedly all that was fixed.

The issue today is car starts right up then stalls. Still has gas in carb and will restart. No obvious vacuum leaks NO POWER BRAKE BOOSTER. Drum brakes.

I was thinking it starts on gas from accelerator pump but idle passages and main jet could be clogged, so what other ideas do you have. Plugs and wires are good. It could be the ignition switch or the ballast or FILL IN THE BLANK.

Thanks Pete

If you want to check the "Ballast resistor" which in those years was a resistor wire turn the key to the "run "position and check for voltage at the coil + terminal. When the car starts initially it is running on voltage from the bypass circuit from the "I" terminal on the solenoid. When you release the key when it starts the connection is broken. The feed from the ignition switch through the resistor wire is then supposed to feed the coil.If the resistor wire is burned out no voltage in the "run "position on the ignition switch. If it starts and runs momentarily I dont think its a carb problem.Check the ignition circuit as I have explained.

Since the the car was charged backwards and circuits burned out the ballest resistor is a good place to look. Symptoms also sound like thats the problem. Not sure if a "modern" mechanic would understand the start/run concept used by our favorite cars. Chuck

Y's guys rule!
Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

So then it will only run in the start position, starter's turning, it's cranking and firing and dies when the key is released and returns to the run position?

Charlie

The car starts and will continue to run but only with a lot of throttle. The more I think of it the more I think MAJOR VACUUM LEAK. Pete

If it continues to run than its not ballast resistor.
