I ran accross a listing on Craigslist for a power steering unit off a 75-80 Ford Granada. The ad said something about these could be used on a 54-57 Ford.Never heard of this swap before.Anyone else know anything about it?

Well, I know you can use the spindles from those Granada years, but as for the rest of the set-up, that's a mystery to me. I would ask the seller what parts come with this setup. 54-57 Ford clutch cars are alot more difficult to set-up power steering on due to the clutch linkage and brackets. "Gearheads" sells a power steering box and complete set-up for 54-57 Fords if you car is an automatic. Borgenson has a similar set-up also. Rono

I think the Granada box is the same as the late 60's Mustang and Comet. There used to be some articles around on swapping them into a Y-Block car. The 65 boxes had a solid shaft, like ours, but the 66 until (I think) 1970 use a rag joint. Also Borgeson has a integral power steering box to replace them. You would, at the least, have to cut your column, put in a mounting point, and add a rag joint. Not impossible. I have the Mustang box on my roadster but its mounted on its side. Chuck

The Granada setup is like the old Falcon Mustang with the power assist cylinder similar to what is on the 54-57 Ford. The box itself is the same for power or manual-like the 54-57 Ford.I have just never heard of adapting the Granada power assist to the 54-57 Ford. The setup is similar but even a 57 Ford power system is not useable on a 55-56 because of some differences.

Dick Cohen of Stop n' Drop told me a long time ago how to do the conversion. Here is a copy of a article he wrote on the subject. Dick had Granada Power Steering (and of course Granada Power disc brakes) on his '54 Ford Shop Sedan Delivery that was his shop and demo truck (Top left of web site). Dick's no longer with us or I would ask him about it for you. Hope you can read the small writing, tried to make it larger.

I put it on my '54. Pretty simple, straightforward swap. Had to make a 1" spacer to go behind the idler arm and mount the bracket for the steering ram, and the rest is pretty much bolt up. Use the Granada pitman arm (it bolts to the original steering box).

Good to hear from someone who has done this. The instructions say you need to cut a hole in the frame to be able to mount the bracket near the steering box for the ram bracket.Did you have to do that?Surely you could use longer bolts to go right through the frame instead of cutting a hole?Or what did you do.Seems to me Ford use to supply I think they were called "crush nuts" that were meant for that type of situation. What did you use for brackets to mount the pump?

Are you saying the the slave cylinder and tie rods from the Granada will fit a 56 Ford car? Or does the Granada have an intergral steering box that will work. Sorry but Chuck needs simple pictures and explanations. And even then there is no guarentee. Chuck

Simple Chuck! It has a slave cylinder setup same as a 54-57 Ford. This is the same system used from about 63 in the small Fords like Mustang,Falcon,Comet, and later with Maverick Granada etc.Thats why I was surprised when i ran across this listing on Craigslist.Never heard of it before but it is doable as Butch has done his.
