Yes John, you are correct. I drilled and tapped the temp. sender bushing on the 1961 292 that I put in my '54 Mercury so I could use the stock 6 volt sending unit. I did it with the engine in the car and it worked out fine. Alan S. Freeman

Looks like the sender on my application will go into the passenger side head at the rear. Seems to fit all be it a little tight.

The pipe thread at the back of the manifold is a vacuum source, not hot water.  Also, I wonder if the '54 bulb will fit inside a 1/4" fitting such as your reducer.  My opinion is that you will either have to tap the old original bushing or install a new one.

I have a similar problem 57 312 in a 54. I do see a location near the distributor and the temp sender does fit, but is tight for the distributor ( mallory dual point ) I may be able to buy a curved pipe from the hard ware store.

I thought about the 4 barrel manifold at the back has the same pipe thread as the sensor..

Just a thought, If the bulb of the temperature sending unit is not in the coolant you will not get the correct reading. If by using your fitting it raised the sending unit out of the water and created an air bubble around it... just saying.

I went to the hardware store today and got a brass 1/4 npt male to a 3/8 npt female. Only set me back a few bucks and worked out perfectly. Just gotta set the timing tomorrow and the old girl will be back on the road again.

The bushing in the head could be removed. Check this tool on CASCO.

They also have the 56 sending unit. Chuck

JLB:

A bushing is backwards from what he needs. He has the large (3/8 npt) sender and the small (1/4 npt) hole. It is possible to drill and tap the bushing in the head while the engine is in the car, but requires some effort.

Haha, I tried that once, more trouble than it's worth because it is hard to get to. Much easier to but tool and correct bushing.

GREENBIRD56 (7/3/2012)
I believe this link will take you to a page where you can see one......

Concours calls it a "TEMPERATURE SENDER ADAPTER BUSHING"- p/n 10911-AR- $15.25w00t

Also a handy tool to look at - the Temperature Sender Remover

http://www.concoursparts.com/

There is probably one of the right size stuck in the old head......they are press-in rings with pipe threads to match the sender.

I actually have installed bushings in both of my heads, one for the gauge and one for the thermal switch for my electric fan.
