How easy should the vaccuum advance plate move on a 57 & up dizzy if you suck on the hose to it. Mine barely moves and I seem to remember it moving much easier. Thanx, Gary

you should be able to get it to full advance sucking on the hose easily sounds like the breaker plate needs a little lubrication

The later ones use nylon pads instead of the old style steel rollers.Possibly the pads are worn allowing the plate to tilt and hangup.Depends on how much use the distributor has seen.Or it ould just need a little lube as Moz indicated.

Just be pretty sparing with the lubricant when shining it up - goo in there is not good.

For a grease type lubricant that doesn't spread out - the Motorcraft silicone caliper grease is high temp and stays put.

Is the vacuum can one of the "newer" type (with the adjustment screw down in the vacuum port) - or the older variety one with the hex nose nut for the entry of the vacuum fitting? A little WD40 or other rust blaster will help free up any sticky stuff on the vacuum side of the diaphragm.

To make sure diaphram is not leaking thus not pulling plate around, suck hard watching plate and put tongue over hose to hold pressure, if it goes back, its leaking, or disconnect arm and check plate movement by hand.Smile

Ok, thanx for all the suggestions, I tried it off of the dizzy and it still pulled hard, I'd think it wouldn't work at all with a hole in the diaphram...mine is the offset arm, non-adjustable....WD40....how?? Gary

Just because it does not look adjustable it may still have the allen key type adjustment through the vacuum opening. It may be turned all the way clockwise which makes the tension very tight on the spring inside preventing it from moving easily.WD 40 squirted through the vacuum opening will make it easier to turn the adjuster inside.

This is the style with the 3/32 hex key adjuster - goes in through the vacuum port. Same spot you would squirt something in to free the mechanism a bit.

Take care with the adjuster - if the hex key fits but the screw is frozen - it is easily stripped.

Suggest squirt some wd-40 a couple of times  and leave it for 24 hours. Not worth rushing and stripping the screw.

Did the WD40 last night, this morning the allen screw turned very easy, both directions, am I suppose to feel something with this, does it get tightened somehow? Gary
