That price is a little high.. Im sure I had a Cardone reco unit sent to me here in Perth from Rockauto, cost me $150 all up no core I just recently picked up one for $70. delivered to to my mate in Cali. Its in a box and waiting to come over in the 35 truck I bought. Also bought a lightning 3 Pertronix unit for $116. delivered , Coil to match $40. Again that was to my mate and I put it in my luggage when I left, home now I will fit that setup shortly.. BigGrin

Mergry56,

That good to know. I was going update the coil, so I might give that company a go.

Cheers

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your help. I have dealt with Mac's Autos a fair bit in the past as I have another 56 2dr Mercury in the restoration stages too, so might just buy a rebuilt/Reco distributor from Mac's as I often buy other bits & pieces. USD$190 + $50 core fee sounds OK??

FYI Grizzly, You can purchase Pertronix products locally in Aust from the distributor here ProQuip in Bayswater Victoria Aust. and if you find an Ebay price thats better than theirs they will match it. Easy for me as they are literally around the corner from home so I can call in and pick up!

Again guys thanks for all the advice.

Let me add that the distributor recommended uses ported vacuumfor the vacuum advance. I'ts a good match and will work fine. Don't get confused with the loadamatic. The 64 distributor is not one of those.

There were/are three vacuum sources available - depending on the carburetor.

(1) The Ford "Load-O-Matic" distributors depended on VENTURI vacuum as a signal proportional to engine speed. In effect - how much air is bing sucked down the intake manifold? This signal came from a carefully placed orfice in the caburetor venturi - vacuum was induced by air flow over the open orfice. The carb either has this port or it doesn't - Ted knows how to add it to some of the carbs that will accept the modification. Ford used this system on the Y's up to 1957 - with no centrifugal advance.

(2) MANIFOLD vacuum - simply the level of vacuum existing in the plenum of the intake manifold tract under the carburetor. Suction provided by the engine working as an air pump with the throttle at various opening levels. Can be a good source of engine information and tuning aid if you know the "signal" the gauge is giving you. Can be used as a source of vacuum signal to a distributor if the arrangement is designed and tuned for it.

(3) PORTED vacuum - In simple terms this a a source of manifold vacuum (2) that is regulated by the primary throttle plate of the carburetor. At idle the port is at atmospheric pressure - no vacuum. As the throttle opens, the port is gradually exposed to full manifold vacuum. Ford used this vacuum signal for the vacuum advance system on vehicles 1957 and later - to sum with the centrifugal advance.

You stated that you have a WCFB Carb.  They have  manifold vacuum.  It is my understanding that you need throttle vacuum to properly operate the vac. advance on the Ford distributor.  Most likely the person that set up your engine knew this also and that is probably the reason that he installed the Mallory which usually has a manual advance.  Maybe some of the experts can chime in on this and give us more info.

Brian,

I will add that the referbed dizzy I got was the later three sided body type.

I have a (very) well worn y block unit you can have. The spring posts are almost worn through etc, etc, so if you are into some fabrication and willing to chance it, your welcome to it.

Cheers
