I pulled the pan and seal retainer, I do have the two piece neoprene rear main seal that came with my FelPro master set. I had already bought an extra rear main seal kit since I assembled the short block in January, and the side seals were pretty stiff. I wasn't sure they were seated correctly. I cleaned everything good and was a little more generous with the Permatex this time. I also reinstalled the oil pump with another gasket that seemed a little thicker, the factory manual says to use no sealer. The rear main seal retainer bolt threads are dry, but the two pan bolts do go directly to the sump so I applied sealant to the threads, just like the oil pickup tube. I'll let it sit tonight and see what happens!
I know you can't save them all, but I'm tryin anyway!

I had an engine seap oil when under pressure between 6 and 7 cylinders. Found it's origin to be at the horizontal head passage before going up top. The oil was passing between the two cylinders. The head was newly surfaced, block wasnt surfaced, with steel gaskets. Even with the engine on a stand it was very hard to see until the oil had migrated back and dripped off the oil pump.

If it's seeping from the opposite side of the oil pump, it's not an oil pump gasket or bolt. The pan bolts or studs in the aluminum seal retainer need thread sealant. The head bolts do not.

Hi All, couple dumb questions:
Getting the 57 292 together finally. It's still on the stand, I torqued down the heads, bolted the rocker assys and added 2 qts to the pan. I spun the pump with a speed handle. I got good top end oiling and put it away for the night. Today I noticed oil seeping from the back of the pan and dripping on the floor. Its not coming from above, all the galley plugs are in and not coming from the camshaft plug. I snugged the pan bolts and when I wipe it down, it seems to start seeping from the right side of the rear main seal retainer - opposite from the pump. I used the oil pump gasket that came with the pump, but I have another from my master set. Since the oil pump, filter and galley are the only things right now that are full, I figure it has to be a oil pump gasket or mounting bolt. Do the oil pump or rear main seal bolts enter the galley? The rear main seal shouldn't have any contact with oil pressure but I didn't put any sealer on bolt threads. Before I pull the pan off and redo the side seals and pan gasket, should any bolt threads be sealed?
Also, I looked real hard at all my head bolts and the threads don't enter the water jacket, the instructions say apply sealer to any threads that enter the water jacket, I'm used to that on Windsors. Do 292s have any wet headbolts?
