Depending on the bell housing you have, I'm pretty sure that the top loaders with the narrow pattern will bolt right up. I have read some posts about the length of the shaft being an issue, but my dad found a bell housing for a 53' merc flathead that he had in his 46' and the top loader went right up to it. it looked the same as the one I have for my 292, so I plan to do the same when I can afford one...

I've got a Mustang 3.03 toploader on my 272, a couple very minor alterations, and it works great. Gary

I don't know if you are planning a car or truck tranny swap, but John Mummert sells an adapter to bolt up a Borg Warner (Mustang) T-5 to the Y Block Bellhousing. Rono

4 speeds were not stock on it in 57 so there are a few mods when using one, input shaft needs to be cut roughly 3/8", input bearing retainer machined down slightly to fit opening in bell, rear trans cross member moved slightly. Heavy duty driveshaft and 9" rear because with the 4 speed you will be launching a lot harder and the original yokes and ujoints will not hold up. additional leaf springs and/or traction aids or wheel hop will be an issue.

When using a top loader 4 speed, be aware that the ones behind a FE have a shorter input shaft than one that was behind a small block. If you have a FE trans, you will have to make up an extended crankshaft bearing.
Top loaders 4 speeds also came with three distinct bolt patterns that I know of. The first was the same as a Y. These were the early ones. The next ones had a dual bolt pattern at the top, one of which was the Y pattern. Bottom did not change.
The last ones had the wider bolt pattern at the top, but supposedly you can drill the other pattern without a problem.

My experience with the input shaft length has been just the opposite. The big block fits fine. The small block is a little too long and must be shortened slightly. I did one back in the day with an all syncro 3 speed which is the same dimensons as the 4 speed and used front end alignment shims between the bellhousing and the transmission. Crude but it worked. Cutting the input shaft would be the way to go. The other difference between the big and small block transmissions is the gear ratios. Small block is geared lower in first. Also the small bolck is not as tough if you have a high horsepower engine you may break it. Big block is a lot stronger.

Not sure what you want? Auto, manual, originality, ease of fit, cost? There are a number of transmission adaptors that fit the y block Mummert has a t5 adaptor and a C3 bell housing Wilcap has t5 and GM 3 & 4 speed autos covered Bendtsen has a AOD adaptor (most ford auto's really) quicktime has a T5 bell housing kit (carful with that one) And there's a guy that advertises an adaptor in Y Blocks magazine for AOD A good range really Warren

55, A transmission that is close to the age of your f100 would be the cheapest option. Even a mustang all synchro three speed will alloy you to shift down to first on the run. Most of us either save up or buy a change piece by piece. So research what you want and work to it over time. cheers Warren
