Hi Everyone,

I have read that there are a couple different lengths of push rods for Y's. I am rebuilding a 292 from a 59' Edsel, the guy I got it from said the original heads were lost, but sold me a set of ECZ G heads and some new or rebuilt rocker assemblies in the lot of parts. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what Rods I need? I have the originals, will these work alright?

Johnny;

The pushrods you got with the 292 motor should work fine (I think) with the "G" heads. I would make sure they are not bent. You can roll them on a piece of glass or other flat surface to check them out. If any are even slightly bent, I would replace the set. BigGrin

It would help to know which ratio rockers you have. Look on the rocker arms for the numbers. The ECG-6564-B2 are the high ratio (1.54:1) rockers. The 1.43:1 ratio rockers have numbers like 5751066. At least those were numbers off rocker sets I've had in the past.

Go to Links on opening page & go down to J.Mummerts page. He list the normally correct Pushrods depending on the year of heads.[

Thank you both Ron and PaulSmile

I checked John Mummert's page and found that the push rods I have should be the right length according to the head castings and years listed. I'm going to check my rockers and roll/check the rods tomorrow.

I have another 292 that I got from a junk yard with COTE head castings, the rods from it are the same as the ones from the 59', but according to John's page they should be from 1960 and longer. Is the difference between the two noticeable to the naked eye or were there some manufactured in 60' that still used the shorter push rods?

The engines are 50+ years old, there's no way to know at this point what happened in the interim. Exchange engines were often re equipped with non original heads by rebuilders. And it's likely that pushrods were exchanged in some cases also. For normal use, the engines usually performed o.k.. However reports of bent or thrown pushrods isn't uncommon.
