Hello.

So, been hunting and hunting concerning a T56 six speed in a 55 Bird. Ran across the name Gary Burnette. However, can't seem to locate much info referencing the trans swap, if said info is out there. BigGrin. Any help would be great! Like to see how this swap worked. I'd imagine it's about the same as a T5 swap but the six speed might be longer. I'm full of questions as to how this set up would work. Which input shaft, what car the trans needs to come from, etc. etc. My T10 4 speed and 3.90's are not highway friendly! Running 3200 or so at 65mph w00t

Thanks!!!

I can't help with a 6 speed, but the TKO500 in my roadster was noticeable larger than the T5 in the bird, and the last time I saw a T56 sitting on the floor, it seemed larger yet. The T5 in the bird was a piece of cake, and I really like the 2.97 low and .8 something overdrive. With a 26 inch rear tire, I'm a little tall with 3.31's, and about to change to 3.7's or 3.9's (can't decide if the cost of the new posi unit is worth it to go 3.9). At one point I had a 3.27 low with 4.11's, and stock 27.? tires, and you have to shift in the Safeway parking lot. But I'm not racing, or dropping the clutch at high rpm.

The two 6 speed cars I owned, 6 th was useless under 75 mph, and then on the flat.

I had really good experiences with D&D performance for both the tranny's and speedo gears, etc. Used Mummert's adapter.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, that's what I was kinda thinking too about the 6 speed. Overdrive is kinda useless. Had dealt with that when kicking around the idea to do a T56 in an S10 I had. Never really utilize 6th. We'll probably go for a T5 but sure would be interested in learning bits about the 6 speed. Low rear gears and a 28" tire (235/70-15) I think a 5 speed will do fine.

The 6 speed is larger and requires enlarging the trans tunnel because the trans is taller, alittle trans trimming, and a small amount of modifing the X frame which is alot of work when it's all added up. But I really like the two overdrives, the .62 is alot better than the .8 out on the interstate with 3.90 rear gear and 27in tires thou. I like the sound of using the 5-speed but using the .62 overdrive instead of the .8 which I find alittle lacking from 1 to 1 but still better than no overdrive at all.
