Looks easy when reading the 57 car shop manual; anyone ever done it and have some insights to share??

I'm thinking of doing it soon to my Fairlane and hope to take some pictures along the way if anyone is intersted.

Never overhauled a 57 shift linkage but I did a bunch of Econolines. Picture in the manual looks the same as the Econolines. They were always freezing up because they were open to the elements at the grille opening in front. Some were so bad you had to replace everything. After you get it on the bench you have to turn the collar between the two arms for access to the roll pin that basically holds the whole thing together. Clean it up real good before you start & you'll see the direction to drive the pin out. If its corroded bad you may have to soak it w/penetrating oil. After the pin is out everything should just slide off. I removed the shift linkage off mine when I went to a 5sp for a cleaner look. Only problem I had was when I had it ready to remove from the column it wouldnt slide low enough to clear post on the top where the "hockey stick" rides. Had to persuade it a bit.
