Howdy all Another question! (I love these!) Has anyone used a trans adapter from http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm ? I want to bolt an E4OD to my 292 and would like to hear some adapter stories. Best Regards,

I have one but havn't installed it yet. This winter I hope! I hope you mean AOD and not the Electronic version. The early AOD only needs a detent cable for down shifts etc. The E series has a computer! Chuck
Y's guys rule! Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

I am afraid I will have to agree with Moonshadow. I had an E4OD in my 89 F-350, 460ci, dually, crew cab, cowboy limo, etc. etc. etc., and all that transmission gave me was trouble. I finally had it rebuilt by a good transmission shop, that gave me a 3 year warranty -- no matter what I hauled -- they really beefed it up. I remember "feeling" the positive shifts as the clutches engaged each other (when I was empty). Mind you, I spent almost $3500, but it took that much to get it right, and then I had to always keep an eye on it. I had to take it in twice after that, and the fellas honored their warranty - absolutely no charge to me. Well, I sold it in 2000 to a guy and told him that the warranty was transferrable for only a $50 charge. He didn't do it. 6 months later he came crying back to me about the transmission...what I was supposed to do? I know of 2 other fellas that had the same trouble with the E4OD. I would not have another. Dan

Where possible, I like to keep a Ford in a Ford, but I'd personally prefer to use a 700R4 or similar. I've heard that the 700R4 and it's close relatives are sturdy, reliable transmission.
Since it take an adapter to mate the y to a AOD, I would think they could do the same to mate a y to a GM automatic overdrive.

Re the AOD discussion. There is an outfit in Canada that does AODs for mustangs and other Fords. They are not cheap but the stuff works. Also herad good things about TCI. I run a Lentech in my pro street Ranger (11.90's @ 116 mph) It's worked very well. If you are going to use a stock AOD, look for a 5.0 Mustang, Lincoln Mark VII, or Lightening unit. Those all have larger apply pistons and better clutch packs. A Lentech or TCI unit will modify the weak points including the lock up convertor and two piece input shaft. That would provide you with a fairly bulletproof unit, as good or better than the 700 or 200r4. By the way, most of the reacers seem to prefer to modify the 200R4, rather than use a 700. Ask TCI. I don't know.

This outfit "Wilcap" has some interesting adapters - and the GM transmissions are often less expensive to get a hold of. The one in my Z28 has held up to some serious abuse - we pulled the pan and filter recently at 90,000 miles and everything looks very good. Ditto for the 200 4R in the Olds - still holding its own too. http://www.wilcap.com/ I think Al Frakes is getting closer to having his AOD going - its a Bendtsens - and he's happy so far but its taken some tinkering with linkage. An F-350 truck with a big block is a little different animal than a Y in a street vehicle, so maybe there's hope........

Well thanks for all the info on the E4OD. Yeah I have heard that that they have had some problems. I need special things though. The one that I have came out of an F450 Super Duty(16,000GVW). I really need a trans that I can load up. This one ran about 100,000 miles with a service body and equipment trailer towing a small excavator on it (around 22,000lbs total) It never broke. I won't be using it for other than a core for a custom rebuild since it is the 7.3L diesel bell/case. I'll be getting a 302/352/300 style bell/case to adapt the 292 to. I'll also probably be using one of the after market (programmable) controllers. Also It has the ability to accept the tailshaft mounted E-brake all F-450s had back then 1980's-1990's. My F-600 needs the trans mounted brake since I have no way to put a parking brake on it. An AOD might be a little anemic for a heavy duty application. I like the TH700R4 as a possibility since they can be built pretty strong and you can put a locking TC in them but I haven't been able to find any one that has seen a tail-mounted E-brake for them. I'm going to have the E4OD custom built for towing etc. I know it won't be cheap...
