I'm putting a 292 in my 53' Mainline. It's pretty much built and I'm going to use Hurst front mounts. However I'm running into a snag with the drag link. I have all four types of oil pans(front sump, both rear sump truck pans, and a T-bird pan) but none of them clear the drag link. I cannot use the front sump pan because it would hit the front cross member. I bought an extra drag link and was going to put a drop in it, very similar to how Hurst used to build them.

However, after talking to a few people, I'm not so sure that is the best way to go and modifying an oil pan to fit might be the better route.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on pros and cons of either of these mods, I would sure love to hear themBigGrin

Thank you,

I put a 289 in a 53 years ago.I initially had the draglink modified.Problem was the link was dropped in the centre between the 2 tie rod ends.It would still hit the pan when the steering was turned. It can only be dropped as far as I know between the tie rod ends(centre section). After that I got hold of a Econoline Van 302 pan and had it reworked for clearance with the stock centre link. That was a better solution so my opinion would be modify an oil pan.

Thanks for the advice! I think notching the pan will be the way to go. Anyone know what the deepest screw on oil filter is? I'm going try and put whatever volume I take off of the pan back on, but thought this might help.

I have an old truck pan with a rear sump that is all banged up from the junkyard setting the motor down on it. I'm going to start with that one.Smile

You might consider a remote oil filter setup with potential for dual filters to increase the capacity. just an thought.
