Hi all,

New to the forum and Y-Blocks.

I have the above 2 sets of heads both off 272's and due to the different combustion chamber shapes (same valve sizes) was wanting to know if one set of heads was a better option than the other?

I have been researching all I can regarding these engines and have printed John Mummerts Head Chart and downloaded any other information available (wish I could download a set of ally headsWink).

I'm in Australia and don't know what is available around here yet but will go and have a chat to Cusso Bill hopefully next week.

The engine I have is a Commonwealth 272 bored .060" with flat top pistons, isky E4 cam, intake will be fabricated with intercooler and roots blower running 6psi.  Don't have carburettors yet and have just acquired a windsor dizzy to see if I can transfer the mechanical advance into the loadamatic, have a petronix ignitor and coil.

Been reading the manifold test and am keen to see how the fabricated manifold performs at low revs and carb options.

The engine came with a timber ski boat hull which also needs a lot of work.

Just so you understand where i'm coming from this is my current family ski boat and engine.

Cheers,

James

Ford experimented extensively with cylinder head design on the Y engines over the course of its production run.  The ECG-D head pictured on the left was going for the Ricardo combustion chamber design which was early swirl technology.  I would suggest checking the combustion chamber cc’s on both sets of heads and then letting the calculated compression ratio sway the decision on which head to use.

Thanks Ted.

The head chart I have tells me that the;

ECG-D has a cr of 7.6 and cc "o"

ECZ-A has a cr of 7.6 and cc "l"

Anyone decipher the cc codes?  ECZ-A looks to have a larger volume (just trying to avoid having to stuff around and cc them:dozeSmile.

Also just found a tutorial on the site of how to post the headsSmile.
