I am getting consistent voltages across the battery in the 15.5-16.1 V range. This voltage is reached before 1000 rpm and maintained at higher speeds, which suggests the regulator is regulating. I realize there is temperature compensation and that specified regulator voltages can be very close to 16 in cold weather, but it seems excessive, and I would think a full battery would bring the volts to the low end of the range for a given temp. Also, my ignition coil is getting hot if idled long enough (stays cool at high speeds). I am concerned that the high voltage is taxing all of my electrical circuits needlessly.
Things I have checked/done:
1. Installed new battery. Old battery worked fine but tested bad at the local parts store. 2. Installed new regulator. Old crusty regulator was delivering the same voltages. 3. Cleaned battery ground connection and terminals. 4. Checked wiring from gen to reg, polarized gen.
Do you think the regulator needs to be adjusted?

I have heard that voltage should be between 14.6 and 15.3. That is what I try to maintain. Maybe tweak the regulator.

Paul's comment about voltage is correct. Before I adjusted the voltage regulator I would recheck the voltage using another volt meter. The fact that both regulators display the same voltage currently would make me suspicious about the reading you are getting.If the voltemeter checks out as being accurate then it is a simple matter of bending the arm which contacts the spring of the voltage coil to raise or lower the voltage by raising or lowering tension on the spring. One other ground to check would be the engine/body ground connection.
