Looking to buy a locking gas cap for my 56.The original Parts Catalog lists both a vented and non-vented cap.I have the pipe going from the top of the tank back up to the top filler pipe. This Gas Cap I should purchase is non-vented I think?

I'm not sure, but since the pipe you have goes back into the filler pipe (which closes the system) than I would say you need a vented cap. I know Ford did not go to non-vented caps in the TBirds until 57.

I've run vented gas caps on all my 50s Fords since the days when they were just used cars. The pipe from the tank to the filler neck is to let air out of the tank as you fill it.

As Paul 2748 points out, 1957 T.Birds used non vented caps & I'll point out, so did the cars. The vent pipe went up into the quarter panel & came around & out behind the license plate, not into the filler pipe. My car came to me with a vented cap. In the heat of summer, in the garage with the vented cap, I could often smell fumes. Replaced it with a non vented & it seems to have corrected the problem.

Then there must of been 2 different styles of tank on 55/56/57 Ford cars. All my cars had the pipe go to the filler neck, the 55 & 57s were built in Somerville, Ma, the 56 at Marwar, NJ.
