Besides age, fatigue or cycling wear comes into play. In the case of the Y and if the bolts are the originals, then being over fifty years old makes them iffy at best. As a general rule, after six times being torqued, replace the bolts. And anytime the bolts are removed from the rods, then resizing the big ends is recommended.

Stinger40, I thought the rod bolts were a cause of engine failure in y block if you pushed them too far. Always use new bolts but if your looking at machining the rods for arp bolts resizing etc try these first http://www.ford-y-block.com/perfpart.htm. Value for money.Cheers Warren

ARP bolts will always be better than reusing the stock bolts. Just thinking of their age and how many times they may have been through torque cycles they will have less strength. I use them on just about any rebuild. Cheap insurance. Chuck

I am building a mild street 312 with 56/57 (ECZ?) rods- not the C1 truck rods- is it worth the money to buy ARP rod bolts or are the stock rod bolts known for holding up fine?
