Depending where you are located you should try Mike at Zeb's Auto Salvage in Tegerton, WI. for a replacement used box because he has a nice collection of '56's.
Also BirdHaven in Ohio would be able to answer about any '54 to '56 Question you have and a good parts inventory.

I asked this question some time ago and the answer is somewhere in the old forums. The sector shaft on the 2 and 3 tooth boxes is a different size. That said, thats all I remember. Hopefully one of the forum guru's will repost the information. Chuck

Thanks! I did reread that one. What I was hoping for was a casting # which is different for the early and late boxes.I have one fellow who has a box suitable for my purpose to rebuild but cant tell if its early or late.I suspect its early style like mine as its in a Canadian built 56.The other post from MarvH who has had years of experience working on these cars indicates most common ones he has seen are early style.I would like to find the later 3 tooth sector shaft one if I am going to spend the money to buy new internals which by the way are readily available from Joblot automotive in New York. You can buy a replacement set of gears and reuse the shafts if they are in good shape. And there are complete input and sector shaft assemblies around too at more money.Joblot sells a complete overhaul kit with all bearings, bushings, shims, and seal kit for $75.00.They also have the complete input shafts but only the repair kit for the sector shaft.
