After I got the starter installed, I found the gasget on the workbench. Guess I should take it off and do it right. Thanks for the response.

Both 'Y' & 'I' blocks as well as early FE's had that gasket. Most were thrown away when a starter was changed because unfortunately not just mechanics worked on cars and it takes a little more effort to reinstall the starter with the gasket. It was missing on our car when we got it so I searched salvage yards until I found one because I did not want a repo but did want the car complete.

Do all Y blocks have a gasket with a rubber shield between the starter and bell housing? My 272 does has no gasket but my 292 and 234 both do.
