Did you block the heat passage from the head through the intake to the other head?Not talking about the exhaust pipe crossover.

One thing I have not seen mentioned is closing the heat crossover through the manifold.You would need to take the intake off and cut a couple of pieces of tin to block the passage from the heads as well either block the heatriser open or remove it and replace with a blank spacer.Anything that helps keep the manifold cooler helps.The heat crossover is not needed in the warm weather.

As has been brought up, any kind of additional riser under the carb potentially helps to keep excess heat from the carb. This would be especially beneficial in minimizing heat soaking of the carb when the engine is shut off in hot weather.

Not knowing your exhaust but my 56 had a very bad carb heat problem so I placed one of the phenolic plates under it and finally released the heat spring on the passenger side heat riser. At idle all the exhaust was passing under the carb and out the left side and it was just too much especially here in So Cal.............Good luck

do you recommend anyone in NJ that rebuilds those carbs?
and have you found it necessary to include the riser?

No it does not need a spacer. However, the prior owner may have added them to provide some respite from the heat of the intake. I believe that the EBU carb is the correct one for a 54.

Hi, I appreciate any help on this- i am completely unfamiliar with the y block.
i just picked up a '54 Mainline with it's original 239 yblock in it. it's not running right so i pulled the carb off for a look and found that the previous owner had built up 3/8 of gaskets as a makeshift riser-what a mess.
Does it need a spacer?
Also...i am looking up the correct carb for this motor and i can see it is supposed to be a 94, but there are so many numbers and models relating to this carb- the one i have says "EBU" on it- is this the right one?
