Hi,

I pulled the transmission out of my '56 Parklane. I think I have a 1955 272 (if I decoded it properly) and air cooled Fordomatic transmission.

Can anyone tell me anything about this transmission? Thanks,

Mike, do you just need to tighten the bands? That is what Fordo's used for shifting. Also, if you find an oil cooled one, Running a couple lines and a trans cooler isn't that bad.

I thought the 56s got the trans with the cooler but a friend had a parklane with a air cooled trans so its possible the early 56s got them,I have a late 55 with 56 parts so anything is possible.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong. But if you can find a Cruise o matic that should work too. I believe they are the same, Just an updated version? Your indicator needle may not be pointing in the right spot. But you will be moving... Just a thought

I think you are right. From what I've read, the '55s and some early '56s were air cooled. I've made the assumption that someone dropped a 1955 drivetrain into the car but maybe it is original...the VIN has been changed out so I don't know for sure yet what was in the car. I think I saw somewhere on the y-block site that my block was used from 1955 to 1957 but I thought either the intake or the heads decoded strictly to 1955, I can't remember. I haven't found the VIN on the frame to see.

I do not know about the heads but if the choke is on the intake than its a 55 part and if the choke is on the carb then its a 56.

The cruse-0-matic were used behind the y-block in 1961 & 62 in full size Galixies. You will have to find a Curse-0 from one of these years as the bell housing is part of the transmission.
