Chuck, I have a suspicion that the Mustang box will work in your 56 or my 57. I am going to try that this coming winter. I'll use a manual box. they came in a 16:1 ratio (Shelby) and 22:1 for the standard cars.

(I apologize in advance to the forum) I currently have a 67 Mustang box and it has about a quarter turn of slop. The adjusting screw is below the jam nut so I think a rebuild is needed. I can purchase a rebuilt 4 or 5 turn for just under $200. I am thinking that without power steering the ratio in the 5 turn box would be a bit better for static or start off turns. This is for the roadster. Chuck

Here’s my two cents worth but remember I’m not a steering expert. From a leverage perspective, the five turn box would be easier to turn with the same size steering wheel. Hard to say what the straight line steering sensitivity would be though but I suspect road wander be more noticeable.

Would a 5 turn steering box be better than a 4 turn for a car without power or power assist steering? Chuck
