Just installed a universal Automer sender with a after market gauge, both are rated at 240/33 ohms, the problem is the gas tank is full and is reading near 1/4 tank with the sender in the tank . With the sender out of the tank, when the float is moved up "full" it reads empty, when the float is down "empty" it reads full. Any suggestions? On a 1955 Ford Fairlane Town Sedan.
Claim to fame is the car was used as an extra in the movie Diner with Micky Rourke, Steve Gootenburg, Paul Riser and Kevin Bacon.

Maybe you've finally discovered a car that makes its own gas! I want one. Chuck

Is it possible the little rheostat gizmo on the sender is mounted upside down? I've had a heap of issues with after market sending units and am not thrilled with the quality control. Just a thought.

My experience with these types of senders is that they can be set up either way, high to low or low to high resistance, depending on the gauge. Usually the instructions cover this. I would remove the sender and put the long arm of the float in the other side of the mounting point. This will in effect reverse the sending unit. You can testing it with it laying in your trunk with some jumper wires before you reinstall. Hope this helps.

Your universal sender is probably for a GM product, if memory serves that are backward from Ford, in that the resistance Increases when the tank get's empty, this is the reverse of Ford senders/gages.

Have you tried reversing the wires on the back of the gauge?
